2024 Foray Walk Locations
We're pleased to share these walk locations for our Cape Cod foray! Kindly refrain from foraging these locations in the 2 weeks preceding the event.
Walk # 2: Rider Conservation Lands, Sandwich
Acquired in 1973, featuring two trail loops on 24 acres bordering 2 ponds and a marsh. 24 mins away.

Walk # 3: Yarmouth Water Lands
​
Parking across from the cranberry bogs on West Yarmouth Road. Multiple access points from there. Scrub Pine and Oak, great for Cortinarius caperatus and Cortinarius semisanguineus. 15 mins away.

Walk # 4: Province Lands & Beech Forest, Provincetown
​
1 mile loop around Blackwater Pond in beech and pine groves, native holly & abandoned cranberry groves. And also a substantially different beech & hardwood habitat. Shady wooded paths and scenic waterfalls make this area a really pleasant spot for a foray. 1 hr 3 mins away.

Walk # 5: Eagle Pond/Little River, Cotuit

Varied habitat of white cedar swamps with thick beds of moss covering the ground, meadows, mature pine forests and a kettle pond. Short easy to walk loop trails. 17 mins away.
Walk # 6: Four Ponds, Pocasset
​
Connects with Bourne Town Forest. 280 acres of well-marked trails of old service roads in pine and oak forest. Many man-made ponds built to service an iron foundry. This area has some more established woods and vibrant wetlands. 37 mins away.

Walk # 7: Shawme-Crowell, Sandwich
​
700 acres of classic Cape Cod forest of pitch pine and oak forest. This site has a large campground area where wide paved roadways make for easy walking. It also has campfire spots throughout the park which can produce fungi that prefer burn areas. Along with many varied species, this site has older oaks and Maitake are often found here. 25 mins away.

Walk # 8: Sandy Neck Beach, Barnstable
​
Barrier beach, extensive dunes, pockets of pitch pine, oaks, black cherry, sassafras and some cranberry bogs. This is classic maritime forest with sand dunes, salt marshes and freshwater wetlands. The sand dunes of the Cape are often home to many fungi, not seen in other environments. 15 mins away.
Walk # 9: Beebe Woods, Falmouth
​
383 acres of varied land with pothole lakes, glacial boulders, oak, pine, beech, tupelo, Atlantic white cedar, sassafras & hickory. There is an extensive network of varied terrians, featuring wooded ridges, steep sided hollows and a scenic pond, known as the “Punchbowl” deep in the woods. 43 mins away.

Walk # 10: Marconi National Park, Wellfleet
​
This historic park is part of the Cape Cod National seashore and features the raised platform where Marconi sent the first telegraph message. There is a beautiful boardwalk through a cedar swamp and wooded areas, while the sand dunes are often home to the beautiful purple Laccaria trullissata. Stunted pine & oak forest leads to a mature mixed woodlands. This is a favorite spot for matsutake hunters. 41 mins away

Walk # 11: Mashpee Pine Barrens, Mashpee
Burnt to remove pitch pines, this low scrub growth habitat with pine & oak supports cottontail rabbit populations. There are also white cedar swamps and large sand pits. The sandy areas are often good spots for Matsutake , while the wooded and swampier areas tend to have a wide diversity of fungi, including black trumpets and gypsies. 30 mins away.
Walk # 12: Nickerson State Park, Brewster
A vast 1900 Acre park. Older hardwoods circling two lakes. Many dense brush areas filled with huckleberry and blueberry. Plenty of wooded trail which are known for many types of suillus and also Gypsies, Cortinarius caperatus. This area is fairly flat and features easy walking trails. 25 mins away.
